Rita (Anderson) Calhoun

Rita (Anderson) Calhoun of East Main Street, Everett, PA was born on November 22, 1929 in Newark, NJ to Edward and Frances Anderson.  

Rita graduated from Washington Mission College (now Washington Adventist University) with a BS Nursing and from NYU with a Masters in Education under a full scholarship.  She went on to become a professor in the nursing program at St. Peter’s General Hospital School of Nursing in New Brunswick, NJ and at Southern Missionary College in Orlando, FL.  Rita’s students and colleagues referred to her as the “energizing force” behind the nursing classes and was known and appreciated for her “unselfish devotedness”.  This followed her through her career, her marriage, her family, and her life in general.

Rita also headed up Nursing Education at Fairfax Hospital (Fairfax, VA) as the Assistant Director of Nursing and subsequently worked in the private medical practice of her brother Dr. James Anderson in Vienna, VA where she developed an innovative and ground-breaking patient education program.

She was well-known for always having a smile on her face and finding the positive in any situation.  She was a beloved daughter, sister, wife, and mother.  She is survived by her husband Clifford Calhoun and her brother Dr. James Anderson. 

Friends and family will be received on Friday, January 19, 2018 from 1:00 P.M. until the hour of service at the funeral home.  

A Funeral Service will be held on Friday, January 19, 2018 in the Chapel at Akers Funeral Home, Inc., 299 Raystown Road, Everett, PA; with Pastor Robert Snyder officiating. 

Burial will be held at Mt. Union Cemetery, Menchtown.  

There will be a memorial service for Rita at the Vienna SDA Church, 344 Courthouse Road SW, Vienna, VA 22180 on Saturday, January 20, 2018 at 3:00 PM.
