William John Obert

William John Obert, of Bedford, Pennsylvania, earned his angel wings on Thursday, July 2, 2026.

Born to William and Ruth (Jug) Obert of Johnstown, Pennsylvania, Bill lived a life defined by service, education, leadership, and dedication to those he loved. He was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Barbara Ann Maldet; his father-in-law, Ronald E. Mills; his mother-in-law, Shirley M. (Welsh) Mills; and his beloved feline companion, Tommy Cat.

Bill is survived by his devoted wife and best friend of 39 years, Sherry J. (Mills) Obert of Bedford, Pennsylvania. He is also survived by his brother-in-law, Joseph J. Maldet of Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania; nephews Matthew Maldet of Reston, Virginia, and Mark Maldet and wife Samantha of Lewisberry, Pennsylvania, along with their children, Dylan and Evan. He also leaves behind his faithful companion, Willy Cat, who was always by his side.

Bill treasured the friendships he built throughout his life and was grateful for the support and companionship of Matt and Val Adamchak, Bob and Lisa Appleby, Al and Annette Godissart, and the many members of the running and racewalking community who became cherished friends and extended family.

A lifelong learner, Bill's educational achievements reflected his commitment to excellence. He attended the USAF Intensive Russian Language School at Indiana University, later earning a Certification in Hospital Financial Management from Indiana University. He received a Bachelor's Degree in Liberal Arts with an emphasis in Business and Health Care Administration from The Pennsylvania State University and a Master's Degree in Health Services Administration from Saint Joseph's College.

Bill proudly served his country in the United States Air Force from 1965 to 1969 as a Russian Airborne Intercept Analyst Crew Member flying aboard RC-130 and RC-135 aircraft. During his military service, he completed numerous hazardous missions and was awarded two Air Medals in recognition of his meritorious service and dedication to duty.

His professional career was marked by outstanding leadership and achievement. He served as Regional Training and Collections Manager for W.T. Grant Company, Director of Fiscal Services at Memorial Hospital of Bedford County, and later as Vice President of Administration and Regional Chief Financial Officer for UPMC Bedford and UPMC Lee Regional Health System.

Bill was equally passionate about education. He shared his knowledge and experience as an Adjunct Professor at the University of Phoenix, Mount Aloysius College, and Southern New Hampshire University, teaching courses in healthcare economics, healthcare operations, healthcare delivery systems, and strategic management. At Southern New Hampshire University, he was honored with the Outstanding Educator Award for five consecutive years.

His many distinctions and affiliations included being an Eagle Scout and member of the Order of the Arrow, a Diplomate of the American College of Healthcare Executives, and a member of both the National Rural Health Association and the Pennsylvania Rural Health Association. Bill was also a member of the Bedford County Chamber of Commerce, served on the Board of Directors of the Bedford County Humane Society, and maintained lifetime membership in the Pennsylvania State University Alumni Association. He authored publications and delivered presentations on topics including rural hospitals, physician recruitment, and telemedicine.

As a young athlete, Bill qualified for the PIAA State Track and Field Meet in the high jump while attending Conemaugh Township High School. His love of athletics continued throughout his life. He also served for many years as a PIAA Football, Track & Field, and Cross Country Official, contributing his time, knowledge, and dedication to student-athletes throughout the region. An accomplished racewalker, he earned first- and second-place finishes in the 1,500-meter and 5,000-meter events at the Pennsylvania Keystone and Senior Games, qualifying for the National Senior Games. Together, Bill and Sherry participated in approximately 50 walking and running events each year throughout the tri-state region until health limitations slowed his activities.

Bill was an enthusiastic sports fan who especially enjoyed Penn State football, wrestling, and hockey, as well as Pittsburgh Steelers, Penguins, and Pirates games. Alongside Sherry, he attended numerous Penn State bowl games, including the memorable 1986 National Championship victory over the Miami Hurricanes in Tempe, Arizona.

Those who worked alongside Bill will remember him as a leader who was strict but fair, a manager who held high standards while genuinely caring about the success of others. He mentored countless hospital employees, helping many develop successful careers and lasting confidence.

Above all, Bill's greatest joy was the life he shared with his wife, Sherry. Their 39-year partnership was built on friendship, love, adventure, and mutual support.

Bill will be deeply missed by his wife, family, friends, colleagues, former students, and the many lives he touched throughout his remarkable journey.

Friends and family will be received on Thursday, July 9, 2026 from 2:00 P.M. until the hour of service at the Akers Funeral Home, Inc., 299 Raystown Road, Everett, PA 15537.

Funeral Service will be held on Thursday, July 9, 2026 at 4:00 P.M. in the Chapel at Akers Funeral Home with Pastor Stewart McClelland officiating.

A Graveside Service will be held at the Everett Cemetery with full military honors by the Fort Bedford Honor Guard on Friday, July 10, 2026 at 10:00 A.M. 

Memorial Contributions: In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made in Bill's memory to the Bedford County Humane Society, Bedford American Legion Post 113 Honor Guard, Central Pennsylvania Nurse Honor Guard, or Bedford County Campus of Allegany College of Maryland Nursing Department.
