Nancy Semanek Obituary

Nancy Jane (Snyder) Semanek, 79, of Lower Snake Spring Road, Everett, PA; passed away on Tuesday, February 7, 2023 at UPMC Altoona Hospital. She was born on November 11, 1943 in Everett, PA, the daughter of the late Samuel Floyd and Cornelia Olive (Hockenberry) Snyder. On June 22, 1964 in Winchester, VA, she was united in marriage to Allan Edward Semanek I. He preceded her in death on July 20, 2018.

She is survived by daughter Karen Nanette Semanek of Everett and son Allan E. Semanek II of Altoona, and a brother, John Thomas Snyder, of Palmyra, PA. She was preceded in death by an infant brother, Arlen Snyder.

Nancy was a member of the Snake Spring Valley Church of the Brethren. She was a graduate of Everett Area High School Class of 1961 and received an Associate’s Degree from Allegheny College of Maryland in Restaurant Management.

Over her career she worked as a teacher at Prontos Beauty School in Altoona and also owned and operated her own beauty salon in Bedford. She later managed the Johnny Appleseed Restaurant, the All American 76 Truck Stop Restaurant and lastly, Perkins Restaurant, all in Bedford County.

Nancy was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution organization, the Bedford County Historical Society and was a gifted painter and avid antique collector. She had great interests in music, sewing and classic stories and fostered those in her children. She was also a very good cook, which she learned from her mother who was the cook at the grade school in Snake Spring Valley during the 1940s and 50s. She had a dear lifelong friend in Sue Ann (Klein) Amick, who grew up in Snake Spring Valley with her. Nancy was surrounded in in her childhood in Snake Spring and Mench by many aunts, uncles and cousins in the large Snyder, Hockenberry and Clark families who were her ancestors and owned farms in Bedford County.

Nancy was a good soul and had a fun sense of humor. She was all heart and was a kind person who tried to help people when she could. She was a good mother and wife and had a deep belief in God. She was a loving person who deeply believed in trying to be a good person. She loved animals and they loved her. She was the descendant of one of the first settlers in Bedford County, Lieutenant of the Revolutionary War Jacob Snyder of Snake Spring Valley.

Friends and Family will be received on Wednesday, February 15, 2023 at the Snake Spring Valley Church of the Brethren from 10:00 A.M. until the hour of service.

Funeral Service will be held on Wednesday, February 15, 2023 at 11:00 A.M .at the Snake Spring Valley Church of the Brethren with Pastor Allen Baker, Pastor Connie McClay and Pastor Kathy Popp officiating.

Burial will be held at Ritchey Cemetery, which if you look at the headstones, you can see was originally called the Snyder Cemetery.
