Mary “Mab” Maher, 92, of Everett, PA; formerly of Cotati, CA; passed away at Spring House Estates on Monday, June 22nd. She was born in Minnesota; a daughter of the late John W. and Edna (Smith) Maher. This is where she grew up and taught as a nun for over twenty years at the elementary, secondary and college levels. Despite the prevailing myth about nuns, Mab never slapped the hands of anyone. She received a master’s degree in religion at the Catholic University of America in 1967. Much later, at 50 years of age, she received a doctorate in transpersonal psychology at the Institute of Transpersonal Psychology in California.
However, her first love was and always has been literature. She considered herself a commoner at heart, just a Minnesota woman who got carried away with education and gardening. After she left religious life she self- published a book titled “Shedding Grace” in 2007. She loved her friends, cats, especially her beloved Cricket who passed the same day, dogs, and gourds. She moved to beautiful Bedford County to enjoy her final years at Spring House Estates to be near her lifelong special friends Marti Kashuba and Beth Gorman of Everett, PA who are surviving her, along with extended family and caretakers.
In memory of “Mab” if friends so desire memorial contributions may be made to Forgotten Felines of Sonoma County, 1820 Empire Industrial Ct Ste E, Santa Rosa, CA 95403.
Her final resting place will be back in Cotati, California.
Arrangements by Akers Funeral Home, Inc., 299 Raystown Road, Everett, PA 15537.
