Mary was born in Robertsdale, PA on March 17, 1929. Mary passed away on April 21, 2025, at the age of 96. She was the daughter of Joseph Parlier and Melva (Greenawalt) Parlier. Unfortunately, shortly after her birth, her mother Melva died due to complications from childbirth. She grew up in a home behind the theater in Robertsdale. Her adopted mother was Rhoda Cowan Parlier. Growing up during the Great Depression, life was very difficult. Mary had four siblings. Those being Melvin Parlier, Beverly Horton, Carmen Fitzgerald, and Josie Parlier (who died at an early age). At age sixteen, Mary married Harry David Helsel from Wells Tannery. Shortly after their marriage, Harry was drafted to serve in the U.S Army during World War II. While Harry was serving in Germany, their first child, Joseph David was born in Lewistown, PA. Shortly after Harry’s return, their only daughter, Eva Rena Helsel Ritchey was born in Robertsdale. A few years passed and their third child, Byron Lee Helsel was born in McConnellsburg. Thirteen years later their final child, David Harry Helsel, was born in Bedford, PA. The family ultimately settled in Wells Tannery where they lived for many years. Her husband Harry, of 78 years, preceded her in death at the age of 96 in November of 2023.
Mary will be remembered for her devotion to her family. She always worked hard to make birthdays and holidays special occasions. Her dedication to her family was truly remarkable. Her cooking skills were admired by many. The food that she would prepare for celebrations was always excellent!
Some may remember her as the friendly face at McLaughlin’s Drugstore or the deli department at Mecca Markets in McConnellsburg where she worked for a number of years.
Mary is survived by her aforementioned four children, their spouses Trudy Helsel, Delbert Ritchey, Janis Helsel and Beth Helsel. In addition, she is survived by ten grandchildren (and their spouses) along with 18 great grandchildren. She will be sorely missed by all that know and love her.
Funeral Services will be held on Saturday, April 26, 2025 at Wells Tannery Presbyterian Church with visitation at 10:00 AM and funeral services starting at 11:00 AM with Pastor Michael Purnell officiating. A graveside service will immediately follow the program at Wells Valley Presbyterian Cemetery. A meal will be provided in the basement of the church following the graveside service.
Arrangements by Akers Funeral Home, 299 Raystown Road, Everett.
