Mary Burket Obituary

On Sunday, September 15th, 2024, Mary, 95, passed to her great reward in heaven. She was the daughter of Wm Roy and Ada (Ritchey) Miller born July 26, 1929.  She was the last surviving member of her immediate family and the last grandchild of William S and Sara Snowberger Ritchey and Dorsey M and Elizabeth (Wyles) Miller.  She was deceased by brother and sisters; Kenneth Ray Miller (Jean), Rebecca Calhoun (Coy), Miriam Croft (Hillis), and Eleanor England (Robert).  Granddaughter Samantha Ann Gross-Batchelor, and Son-in-law Lynn O’Neal.

She was married to Frederick Burket, Jr on May 3rd, 1947 in Winchester, VA.  He passed on January 16th, 2006.  Surviving are the following children, granddaughters and great grandchildren, all of whom she loved dearly and were her true passion for living all those 95 years.  Beverly Ann O’Neal, Deborah Sue Gross-Gallegos (James), and Rodney A. Burket.  Granddaughters; Catharina (Trina) Lynn Gross, Jennifer Lynn O’Neal, and Amy Renee O’Neal.  The following great-grandchildren in order; Victoria Ann Gross, Emma Breanne Carter, Alyssa Mackenzie Carter, Evangelina Batchelor, Connor Everett Patton, Kelsey May and Lindsay Ann Patton (the twins), and Joseph Batchelor Jr.

Mary worked at the G.C. Murphy 5&10 where she met and eventually married the love of her life “Jr”.  Fred, who had just returned home from World War II often said, “I went into Murphy’s to buy some civilian clothes and saw the most beautiful blonde girl of my life.  I told my friend, I will marry her someday”.  They were married for 59 years.  She worked nearly 25 years at the Everett Coat Factory.  In 1976, She and Fred sold everything and moved to Annandale, VA and operated a small business which she was the bookkeeper for over ten years.  She and Fred retired back to Snake Spring Valley for retirement and she worked at her passions of gardening her flower beds, and cooking and baking for family and friends.  With her sisters, she also  enjoyed quilting, which dozens of her creations are now cherished heirlooms of her family.  A dealer once said “I’ve never seen hand stitching so neat and the stitches so close in a quilt before”.  She was also an avid reader and loved keeping in touch with family and friends on her iPad through Facebook.  She was one of the eldest members of the Snake Spring Church of the Brethren and praised her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.  She will live on through the cherished memories of her family.
