Marlene Simmons Obituary

Marlene E. Simmons, 91, of Ragged Mountain Road, Chaneysville, Pennsylvania, passed away peacefully on Saturday, April 22, 2023, surrounded by her daughter and granddaughter at UPMC Altoona, Altoona, PA.  She was born on December 17, 1931, in McKeesport, PA, a daughter of Glenford William and Helen Josephine (Knoll) Hammond. On March 7, 1951, she was united in marriage to Clifford J. Simmons.

Marlene is survived by her daughter, Cindy Miller and husband, Terry, of Schellsburg, PA. A granddaughter, whom she raised as her own, Michele (Elbin) Miller and husband, Jason, of New Paris, PA. She is also survived by two great-grandchildren, whom she loved very much, Olivia and Owen Miller of New Paris, PA.

Along with her parents she was preceded in death on January 11, 2018, by her husband, Clifford J. Simmons; a daughter, Shirley K. Elbin; a brother, Charles (Chuck) W. Hammond; a sister, Dolores J. Carrigan. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

Marlene was a graduate of Everett High School, Class of 1950. She was a homemaker most of her life and along with her husband Clifford she helped run their family farm in Chaneysville. Together they raised cattle, pigs and thousands of chickens. She will be remembered by many who stopped at the farm for eggs or the butcher shop. She was a member of the Chaneysville Senior Citizens Center, the Chaneysville Methodist Church, Chaneysville Women’s Society of Christian Service, and the Chaneysville Fire Company Ladies Auxiliary for many years.

Although she suffered physically most of her adult life with crippling arthritis her sense of humor was never lacking. One of her greatest passions that brought her great joy was playing bingo with her good friend Roxie. She undoubtedly left her two great-grandchildren, Olivia and Owen, a legacy of love that will follow them throughout their lives. She spent her final months at her granddaughter’s home in New Paris surrounded by those who loved her dearly.
