Herbert Christopher Obituary

Herbert E. Christopher, 99, of Plank Road, Hopewell, PA; passed away on Saturday, March 26, 2022 at Hollidaysburg Veterans Home.  He was born on December 8, 1922 in Hopewell, PA; a son of the late Albert Edward and Nellie Jane (Foor) Christopher.  On January 18, 1942 in Hagerstown, MD; he was united in marriage to Eleanor (Browell) Christopher.  She preceded him in death on November 1, 1995.

He is survived by children Carlton "Phillip" Christopher married to Annie, Hopewell; Steven Christopher married to Coleen, Chapel Hill, NC; Jane Beck married to Brian, East Freedom; Becky Beatty wife of the late Lloyd Beatty, Mt. Vernon, OH; Samuel Christopher married to Terry, Fredericktown, OH; Herbert Christopher married to Isabelle, West Columbia, SC; Daniel Christopher married to Trisha, Bellefonte, PA; Sally Koontz wife of the late Glenn Koontz, Everett; Nathan Christopher married to Christy, Fuquay-Varina, NC and Benjamin Christopher and significant other Liz, Matthews, NC; thirty grandchildren; sixty six great grandchildren and eight great great grandchildren; and a sister Amy Keifman, Chambersburg.  He is preceded in death also by a sister Dora Smucker, and grandson Robert Hoover.

Herb was a graduate of Altoona Bible Institute in 1957.  He was a member of the Hopewell Grace Brethren Church, where he attended and served many years as Sunday School Superintendent and Sunday School Teacher.  Herb was a mighty man of God, loved the Lord, his wife, his kids and his church, and will be greatly missed.  To his children, he was a patient and professional teacher, taking the time to teach his sons a trade.  He was a great father, grandfather and friend with a great sense of humor.  He lived his life according to the example of Jesus more than anyone else we know, the same man on Sunday that he was all week. He seemed unafraid of anything or anyone.  He was not driven or motivated by "stuff", he did what he could with what he had and never let anything go to waste. He never wronged another person, remained strong even in tough times.

Herb was a graduate of Defiance High School Class of 1939 and attended Williamson Trade School.  He worked at Fairchild Aircraft in Hagerstown MD. Herb served in the United States Army during WWII from 1943-1945 as a technician fourth grade, military police battalion.  Herb worked as an apprentice at Modern Cabinet in Altoona; Caro Trucking, Everett, and worked as a carpenter throughout Bedford and Blair County before joining the Grace Brethren Church building crew, assisting in construction of thirteen churches.  He did whatever it took to support his family.

Herb was a member of the Hopewell Senior Center and enjoyed reading, playing games, taking walks, telling jokes, and playing the mouth organ and guitar.
