Helen Stup Obituary

Helen T. Stup (nee Thompson), 87, of Clearville, Pennsylvania went home to the Lord on February 11th, 2025. She was born January 26th, 1938 in Frederick, Maryland, the daughter of Roger and Greta Thompson. She enjoyed a long and eventful marriage with her husband of 66 years, Paul Stup, who preceded her in death. Also preceding her in death were her parents and two sisters, Patricia Poole and Betty Ness. Helen is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Elizabeth Stup and Jamie Lloyd of Berryville, VA and three sons and daughters-in-law: David and Penny Stup of Clearville, PA, Edward and Pamela Stup of Enola, PA, and Richard and Melissa Stup of Ithaca, NY. In addition to her children, Helen is survived by 10 grandchildren: Stephen Rumbaugh, Christina Grimes, Jennifer Ramsey, Kristen Batcho, Megan Billie, Carter Stup, Lauren Stup, Rebecca Stup, Allison Stup, and Julia Stup, and 9 great-grandchildren.

Helen trained to become a registered nurse at Frederick Memorial Hospital School of Nursing in Frederick, MD and launched a career that included many years in geriatric care at facilities in Maryland and Pennsylvania. She was especially proud of a long period as director of nurses at Donahoe Manor in Bedford, PA. She was known to maintain very high professional standards in nursing, and was beloved by the staff she led. She encouraged young people to attend college and study nursing throughout her life, including two of her granddaughters who are nurses today.

Helen married Paul, the love of her life, on September 13th, 1958 in the Lutheran church in Frederick, MD. She was devoted to her family and especially loved raising children with Paul on the farm because the family could spend so much time together. She said the sweetest word she knew was “mom.” She and Paul loved to host big family gatherings for holidays, birthdays or just to get together and feast on a bushel of Maryland crabs!

Helen was a devoted Christian, she attended worship throughout her life, actively helped with dinners and social events, helped with vacation Bible school, and taught Sunday School for 20 years. She was a member of First Christian Church in Everett, PA, where she spent many happy hours quilting with her friends, including making crib-size quilts for many people.
