Evelyn Skillington Obituary

Evelyn F. Skillington of Jacks Corner, Bedford County, PA died at home January 21, 2021 following a short illness. She was 100.

A 1942 graduate of Dickinson College where she met her late husband, she attended Dickinson Law School while still an undergraduate and completed her law degree at the Temple University Beasley School of Law. She was admitted to the Washington, D.C. bar at a time when few women were in the legal profession and in the late 1940's she was the Dean of Students at American University.

An active member of the United Methodist Church, she served on lay committees with the National Council of Churches and the Baltimore-Washington Conference of The United Methodist Church. For a number of years she served on the board of directors for Montgomery General Hospital in Olney, MD.

Mrs. Skillington was a past member of Pioneer Historical Society in Bedford County and Bedford Memorial Hospital auxiliary. She also volunteered for many years with Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) in Bedford County and was an avid Bridge player.

She was born in Cape May County, New Jersey, the only daughter of Mae and Edgar Fansler. She was active in sports in high school and college, including the women's basketball and volleyball teams.

She was predeceased by her husband of 70 years, Dr. James E. Skillington Jr., and two granddaughters. She is survived by two children, the Rev. James E. Skillington III of New Windsor, MD and Evelyn Mae Skillington of Hopewell, a grandson and a great-granddaughter.
