Charles Swartzwelder Obituary

Charles O. Swartzwelder, 85, Breezewood, PA; passed away on Monday, February 17, 2025 at UPMC Bedford Memorial Hospital.  He was born on May 8, 1939 in Everett, PA; a son of the late N. Grant and Elvena (Clark) Swartzwelder.  On August 20, 1960 in Winchester, VA; he became the best husband, friend and soulmate to Barbara J. (Steach) Swartzwelder. 

Along with his wife of sixty-four years, he was the best dad to three sons Roger, Jeff (Lois) and Larry; he was special Pap and Pappy to Amanda (Bryan), Charlotte, Brayden and Carleigh; and a brother William Swartzwelder (Anna).

Charles was a graduate of Everett High School Class of 1957.  He was a farmer his entire life.

He was a member of the Breezewood United Methodist Church for more than sixty years, serving in various positions.

Charles was an active member of the Breezewood Volunteer Fire Company for sixty-seven years, serving as fire chief for twenty-one years.  He was named the 1st ever Bedford County Fireman of the year and was a two time Breezewood Fireman of the year recipient.  He was past president of the Bedford County Firemen’s Association.

He served as East Providence Township Supervisor for thirty years, serving as chairman for his entire township career.  Charles was a past member of the Bedford County and East Providence Township Planning Commissions.  He was a member of the Breezewood Lions Club, where he was a past president.

Friends and Family will be received on Thursday, February 20, 2025 from 4-8 P.M. at the Akers Funeral Home, Inc., 299 Raystown Road, Everett, PA and on Friday from 10:00 A.M. until the hour of service at the funeral home.  Breezewood Volunteer Fire Company will conduct services at 7:00 P.M.

Funeral Service will be held on Friday, February 21, 2025 at 11:00 A.M. in the Chapel at Akers Funeral Home with Pastor Ron Hott officiating.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made in memory of Charles to the Breezewood Volunteer Fire Company, 150 Municipal Road, Breezewood, PA  15533 or Breezewood United Methodist Church, 184 N. Main Street, Breezewood, PA  15533.
