Carol Tenley Dickinson, 88, of Hickory, NC died on March 26, 2024, at Carolina Caring.
Born September 12, 1935, in Defiance, PA., Carol was the daughter of the late Myrtle (Rankin) Tenley and Vaughn C. Tenley. Carol was married to William D. Dickinson who preceded her in death. She is survived by two sons: William (Bill) Dickinson, Jr., and his wife Deanna, of Hickory, NC and Vaughn Dickinson and Donna Hagen of Nokomis, FL. Six special grandchildren are: Johnna (fiancé Kevin), Will, Parker, Helena, Aidan, and Brody Dickinson. Carol also considered herself “Grammy” to Cristina and Joe Parker, Luca Hagen, Brendan and Abby Warshauer, and Drew and Rachel Warshauer. Carol was a member of First Methodist Church of Conover, NC.
Carol was preceded in death by one sister, Beverly Ann Irelan, four brothers-in-law and one sister in-law, Jack Skipper, Connie Rodgers and his wife, Betty, Albert Masood, and Harvey Lodge. Carol is survived by one beloved sister, Nancy Tenley Masood of Martinsburg, PA. Bill’s family have also been extremely supportive of Carol: Jessie Skipper, Jean Lodge, Bonnie and Clarence Helsel, Roy Dickinson and Debbie and Danny Gambacurta. All of Carol’s nieces and nephews are very special but too numerous to mention. Carol had many incredibly special friends including Laura and Bill Warshauer, Dick Butler, Martha Dickinson, and Lynn Barajas.
Carol graduated from Saxton Liberty High School, Class of 1953. She earned a B.Ed. at Shippensburg University (1957) and an M. Ed. plus 60 hours from Penn State University. Her career was spent in education in Pennsylvania, California, and Maryland. In 1968, Carol had been appointed as a Child Advocate with Administrative duties and she held this position until her retirement in 1999 from Prince George’s County, MD. Carol received multiple awards, but none were as important as the friendship, love and success of the students and educators she encountered.
Carol’s first love was her family, but favorite activities were traveling around the world, reading and the times spent with her many friends and her Conover Church family. Volunteering at several local organizations was a rewarding way to serve the community. Carol remained a member of the Alpha Delta Kappa Gamma Chapter and Forest Oaks Questers in MD.
Burial and graveside memorial service will be at 11am on April 6, 2024, at the Duval Cemetery in Six Mile Run, PA. Followed by a gathering of friends and family at the Six Mile Run Fire Hall at 12pm on April 6, 2024.
Memorial contributions may be made to First Methodist Church of Conover, NC, 410 First Avenue North, Conover, NC, 28613 and Carolina Caring Catawba Hospice House, 3975 Robinson Rd Building 3, Suite A, Newton, NC, 28658.
