Alfred Putt Obituary

Alfred J. Putt, 85, of Saxton, PA, passed away on Thursday, July 30, 2020 at UPMC Altoona Hospital. He was born on September 4, 1934 in Dudley, Pennsylvania; a son of the late Ernest and Angelene (Villa) Putt.  From the age of three he was reared in the home of the late Joseph and Maude Wyles of Saxton.

On August 10, 1957 in St. Matthews Lutheran Church, Marklesburg, PA; he was united in marriage to Beverley J. (Hetrick) Putt.  

Along with his wife of sixty-two years, he is survived by three children Sharon married to Edward Castronova of Bel Air, MD; Sandra married to Wallace Wetter of Myrtle Beach, SC; Michael Putt married to Jacquelyn of Palm City, FL; nine grandchildren Karen, David, Krista, Philip, Mariel, Tyler, Sara, and Zachary; four step grandchildren; two great grandchildren; a brother Richard Putt of Bedford, PA; and foster brother Jack Eshelman of Winnipeg, Canada.  

Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by infant grandchild Angel Putt; and his foster family Joe Wyles, Jr., Ruth Manspeaker, Mary Stapleton, Betty Righard, Kathryn Morrison, and Martha Hinish.  

Mr. Putt was a member of the Raven Run Church of the Brethren.

Alfred graduated from Saxton Liberty High School class of 1952.   After high school, Al worked at Bedford Springs Hotel, and then went on to work at various places; Saxton Bottling Company as a delivery driver and salesman, PennDOT survey corps, International Shoe Machine Company out of Carlisle and then served as maintenance supervisors for Tussey Mountain School District from 1975 until he retired in 1994.  He and his wife owned The Shoe Box shoe store from 1972-1986 and owned an Electric and Water Heater Business, servicing the area for many years.  

Alfred was very generous man and served the community as a member of the Saxton Volunteer Fire Company from 1957 to current, and member/treasurer of the Bedford County Fireman’s Association. He drove/operated fire truck and ambulance for 60 years, was Fire Chief, Saxton Fireman of the year in 1981, Bedford County Fireman of the year in 1993, and instrumental in the founding of the County Fire School Site.    Additionally, he and his wife received fire and ambulance emergency calls and dispatched via, town siren, telephone and CB radio in their home in the 1970’s and 80’s before 911 service and were known at “Remote 1”.

Alfred enjoyed collecting and restoring antique John Deere tractors, antique “hit and miss” gasoline engines, hunting, boating and camping with his family.

Private services, led by Pastors Allen Baker and Harvey Wason, will be held with burial at Bunker Hill Cemetery. 

A visitation time to celebrate Alfred’s life will be held for the public from 5-7 P.M on Wednesday, August 5 at a large outside pavilion at the Raven Run Church of the Brethren, 616 Raven Run Road, Saxton, PA 16678.  Masks and hand sanitizer will be provided due to Covid.
