Mary A. Johnson, 82, of Wall Street, Saxton, passed away on Sunday, October 1, 2017 at Select Specialty Hospital in Johnstown.  She was born on March 15, 1935 in Saxton, a daughter of the late Joseph Larson and Freda (Foor) Johnson. She is survived by niece Karen (Allison) married to Terry Martin, Everett; nephews, Joseph Larson Allison and married to Teresa and Donald Allison all of Saxton; great nieces Brooke Martin, Lysbeth Allison and Mandi (Allison) Cady; great nephews, Cale Martin and wife Lyniece, Rustin Martin and Dalton Allison; great great nieces, Celeste Martin, Bridget Martin, Brooke Sponsler, Coco Cady, Emmie Thompson and Saige Allison; great great nephews, Cole Cady, Layne Sponsler, Jesse Gonzalez and Brantley Gonzalez. 

She was preceded in death by her sister and best friend, Emma Eliza (Johnson) Allison and her husband Donald “Bud” Allison.

Mary began her education in Saxton and Stonerstown Grade Schools and eventually graduating from Saxton Liberty High School Class of 1953. After graduation she then went on to attend Juniata College and graduated from there in 1957 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Education, later receiving her teaching certification from courses at Penn State and Juniata College. 

Mary taught in various places and grades, such as Allegheny Township, Foot of Ten, Tussey Mountain School District/Robertsdale/Saxton Liberty Elementary until retiring after thirty six years of teaching in 1993. 

She had also won various awards, such as the American Legion Award, several awards through Gift of Time, Teacher of the Year Award 1993, and Who’s Who Among America’s Outstanding Teachers.

She enjoyed gardening, canning, freezing, making wine, bird watching, reading, writing poems and fiction, care for others, teaching, collecting Boyd’s Bears, Penn State football, sewing, crocheting, knitting and especially going fishing with her dad. 

She felt that being able to communicate in a variety of written  ways developed own writing communication curriculum that focused on research writing, to opinion papers, to creative, to informative writing that culminated in a student developed and controlled classroom newspaper.

Friends and Family may call at Akers Funeral Chapel, 715 Church Street, Saxton, PA, on Wednesday, October 4, 2017 from 6-8 P.M. and on Thursday from 10:00 A.M. until the hour of service at the funeral home.

Funeral Service will be held on Thursday, October 5, 2017 at 11:00 A.M. in the Akers Funeral Chapel with Pastor Steve Oberman officiating.

If friends so desire memorial contributions may be made in memory of Ms. Johnson to a charity of your choice.

Burial will be held at Grandview Cemetery.
