Leroy Glenn, Jr. Obituary

Leroy “Bill” Genn Jr., 95, of Everett, PA; passed away peacefully at home surrounded by loving family and friends on Thursday, March 14, 2019. He was born on September 20, 1923 in Washington, D.C.; a son of the late Leroy Glenn Sr. and Pearl (Stang) Glenn.

At the age of sixteen Mr. Glenn began working alongside his father as a brakeman for the railroad at Washington Terminal at Union Station in D.C. Bill enlisted in the United States Navy on December 8, 1941 and served as a Seabee until 1946. He married the love of his life Virginia “Ginny” Zimmerman in 1959 and they lived in Gaithersburg, MD for twenty-five years. In 1985 they purchased their home in Everett and have enjoyed thirty-five years of retirement together.

Bill was well loved by his family, friends, and neighbors and fondly referred to as the “Dinosaur Guy” by many local friends. 

Mr. Glenn spent twenty-five years employed by the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C. as a museum specialist in the Paleontology Department. Bill was responsible for restoring and casting ancient dinosaur bones and put together many popular exhibits including the Wooly Mammoth and Saber-tooth Cat, which are still on display today.

Bill was and incredible artist and skilled craftsman who enjoyed woodworking and creating beautiful furniture for family and friends.

In addition to his loving wife of fifty-nine years he is survived by numerous nieces and nephews; and Chris and Kandi Dinkel and their cherished children Lindsey, Olivia, Caroline; Brandi Shaw; Becky Hall; Ron Dixon; John Coppleman and Bob Corrigan.

He was preceded in death by siblings Ruth, Margaret, Doris and Robert Allen.

Friends and Family will be received at Akers Funeral Home, Inc., 299 Raystown Road, Everett on Monday, March 18, 2019 from 4-7 P.M. and on Tuesday from 10:00 A.M. until the hour of service at the funeral home.

Funeral Service will be held on Tuesday March 19, 2019 in the Chapel at Akers Funeral Home at 11:00 A.M. with Pastor Jay Saxe and Pastor Jim Cutchall officiating.

Burial will be held privately at St. Paul’s Lutheran Cemetery, Jefferson, MD.
