Kenneth Burkett Obituary

Kenneth Monroe Burkett, 84, of Broad Top Mountain Rd, Saxton, PA passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by family on October 12, 2019. Mr. Burkett was born on March 26, 1935, in Coalmont, PA, a son of the late James Henry Burkett and Alice Fern (Bussard) Burkett.

He was preceded in death by brothers William Lynn Burkett, husband of Anna (McIntyre) Burkett, who survives, and David Franklin Burkett, husband of Helen (Cox) Burkett, who survives. He is survived by siblings John Burkett, married to Esther (Lynn) Burkett of West Newton, PA, Rebecca (Burkett) Dolte married to Philip Dolte, James Burkett, and Nancy (Burkett) Reed married to Joel Reed, all of Saxton, PA. He is also survived by 15 nieces and nephews and 27 great nieces and nephews.

Mr. Burkett graduated from Saxton-Liberty High School and from Shippensburg University with a degree in history and political science. After teaching history to high school students, he joined B.F. Goodrich in Akron, OH, where he worked for 33 years. While at B.F. Goodrich, he was selected for training in computer programming, and was among the first generation to enter this emerging field. He later worked as a computer programmer at Letterkenny Army Depot in Chambersburg, PA, from which he retired. He also served on the Tussey Mountain School District School Board for six years and on the board of Shoup’s Run Watershed Association. He was a member of Trinity United Church of Christ, Saxton, PA, where he served on the consistory board and sang in the church choir. He later attended Coalmont United Methodist Church.

He was known to his family and friends as a gentle, good-natured person with a generous heart. He had a special place in his heart for animals. He enjoyed listening to music and spending time with his cats. He was an avid reader, and he loved a good political discussion.

Friends may call at Akers Funeral Chapel, 715 Church St, Saxton, PA 16678 on Saturday, Oct. 19, 2019 from 10:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. for visitation and a memorial service at 11:00 a.m. 

In lieu of flowers, if friends so desire, memorial contributions may be made in memory of Mr. Burkett to Mom’s Pets c/o Laura Meyers at 120 Dudley Rd Six Mile Run, PA 16679 or to the Huntingdon County Humane Society at 11371 Schoolhouse Hollow Rd Huntingdon, PA 16652.
