John "Jack" L. Stevens

John L. “Jack” Stevens, 77 years young, passed away on Sunday, January 12, 2020 at his home in Everett, PA.  He was surrounded in his home by everyone he loved and whom loved him very much.  He passed peacefully telling everyone he loved them.  Jack was born in Amsbury, PA on June 9, 1942.  He was preceded in death by his step-dad George McConnell, mother Genieve (Volk) McConnell and sister Deanna McConnell.  Also, preceding Jack in death were his sister-in-law Gladys Laudermilch, brother-in-law Warren Laudermilch, sister-in-law Rita Pullen, brother-in-law Elliot “Punch” Booterbaurgh, and John “Junior” Booterbaugh, sister-in-law Lora Metz.  Surviving are siblings: Harriett “Mickey” McConnell and her husband Joe; Gerald “Herk” Stevens married to Patricia (Conrad); Terry McConnell; Owen “Bucky” McConnell married to Tracy (Rabish); sister-in-law Mary Lou Meshok and Ed Meshok; brother-in-law Stanley Rex Metz.

On August 21, 1965 he married the love of his life Myra (Booterbaugh) Stevens.  They then created their loving family, three daughters Stephanie Stevens Calhoun married to Richard; Samantha Stevens Foor married to Jason and Shannon Stevens Long married to Michael.  Although he loved his girls deeply, he had a special love for his grandkids and great grandkids whom brought him much love and joy.  Grandkids are as follows: Kristopher Calhoun married to Sarah, Stephen Calhoun married to Breanna, Bailey Foor, Brady Foor, Zachary Long and Marissa Long.  Great grandchildren Scarlet and Paul Calhoun.

Jack left for the United States Air Force straight out of high school; he enjoyed the military and all the travel he got to experience.  He often spoke of his many adventures in England and Greenland while he was stationed there.  After his discharge from the service, he worked at Veeder-Root for a time, and then he began his work in the police force.  He once served as the Chief of Police in Gallitzin, PA.  His favorite job and career was as a Pennsylvania State Police trooper, he served as a Corporal in the PA state police.  Jack had the utmost pride in his job and did it well.  He always said he retired too soon, because he missed the job and all the men he worked with.  Jack was an avid fisherman, not a season went by that dad wasn’t found fishing his favorite creeks for some big trout.  He was a great craftsman of wood and made many special pieces for friends and family.  All kinds of tables, chairs, shelves, etc.  He was a devout reader and loved working the morning crossword puzzles and cryptoquote.  He loved the sport of hunting deer and bear.  He shot his last deer this past December.  He loved being in nature and seeing all kinds of animals.  He loved exercising and taking walks.  He especially loved all of the family’s cats and dogs, his best hunting and beagle buddy “Ringer” passed away a few years ago.  He will miss seeing his many friends at “Coffee Club” at Marteens, he also enjoyed the police retiree breakfasts that met routinely, and he will be missed at the F.O.P. meetings.  Jack was just the kind of man that gave 100% at all the things he did, and would help anyone who needed it.  Jack will be missed truly deeply by his family and friends.

A Celebration of Life is planned for Thursday, January 16, 2020 from 3-8 P.M. at the Wilderness Hunting Lodge, 3261 Elk Lick Road, Everett, PA 15537.  Anybody that would like to celebrate Jack’s life by sharing some memories or stories is very welcome to attend.
