James R. Karns, 84, of Colonel John Drive, Hopewell, Pennsylvania; passed away on Monday, August 27, 2018 at home surrounded by family. He was born on October 26, 1933 in Bedford County, PA; a son of the late Albert J. and Clara (Pittman) Karns. On July 20, 1959 he was united in marriage to Lula (Foor) Karns in Winchester, VA.
Along with his wife he is survived by the following children: Sharon married to Paul Price, Everett, PA; Brenda married to George “Vince” Beach, Hopewell, PA; Dale Karns married to Tammy (Mort), Six Mile Run, PA; granddaughter Kari Karns, who resides in the home and was a caregiver; five grandchildren and nine great grandchildren; children: Dianne Miller, New Enterprise, PA; Ronnie Karns, Everett, PA; Karen Walter, Duncansville, PA; eight grandchildren; thirteen great-grandchildren; four great great grandchildren; siblings Helen Dickinson, Breezewood, PA and Alberta married to Harry Foster, Hopewell, PA; and sister-in-law Evelyn Karns, Everett, PA.
He was preceded in death by a brother Charles A. Karns and a sister Mildred Buseck.
James was a well-known native of Bedford County. He was a member of the Tatesville United Methodist Church, where he served several years as a Sunday school superintendent and on many church committees; he also served on Raystown Ambulance Board of Directors and was a Hopewell Township Supervisor for eighteen years. He worked at Standard Register, Bedford, PA for twenty-seven years; JLG Industries, Bedford, PA for five years, and Hopewell Township in Hopewell, PA for fourteen years until his retirement in 2014.
James had a passion for playing the banjo and bluegrass music; his hobbies were antique cars, and hit ‘n’ miss engines, he enjoyed participating in parades, car shows and engine shows. He looked forward to his weekly road trips with his grandson, Brent Karns. He will be greatly missed by his family.
Friends and Family will be received on Thursday, August 30, 2018 at Akers Funeral Home, Inc., 299 Raystown Road, Everett, PA 15537 from 4:00 – 8:00 P.M. and on Friday from 10:00 A.M. until the hour of service.
A Funeral Service will be held on Friday, August 31, 2018 at 11:00 A.M. at the Tatesville United Methodist Church with Pastor Suzanne Detterline officiating. Burial will be held at Tatesville United Methodist Church Cemetery.
