Frederick "Fred" W. Dodson

Frederick (Fred) William Dodson, Sr., 90, of North Valley Road, Wells Tannery, PA; passed away on Thursday, February 21, 2019 at the Fulton County Medical Center.  He was born in Hopewell, PA on July 4, 1928; a son of the late Harry and Marietta (Speiker) Dodson.  He married Donna J. (Brandt) on August 29, 1949 in Winchester, Virginia.

Along with his wife he is survived by children Alma Smith, Altoona, PA, Cheryl married to Joe Wible, Waynesboro, PA, Christine married to Rex Romig, Waterfall, PA, Fred Dodson, Jr., Everett, PA, Kimberly married to David Fetzer, Massillon, OH, Lisa Dodson, Harrisonville, PA, Douglas Dodson married to Sandra, Spring Mills, PA; siblings Donald Dodson, Hopewell, PA, Shirley married to Arthur Deshong, Hopewell, PA, Donna Jean married to Chester Horton, Hopewell, PA; eleven grandchildren, nineteen great-grandchildren, and several great-great-grandchildren.

Fred came from a family of twelve, and he loved to talk about his early years working on the family farm, in the nearby woods, and helping out at the mill. He was a 1948 graduate of Robert P. Smith High School. Fred held several jobs both in Altoona and in his home area, but he ultimately settled on working for Conrail as a machinist and inspector. Most of his work with Conrail was at the Juniata Shops in Altoona, where he worked until his retirement in 1986 after thirty-seven years of service.

Throughout his life, Fred enjoyed traveling, especially with his family, building furniture, telling of local history and about his roots, and hearing others share their history.  He was a railroad enthusiast, lover of bluegrass music, and the definition of a “people person”. Fred was a member of the Sherman’s Valley Brethren in Christ Church. His dear wife Donna and his family will miss him greatly.

Funeral Service will be held on Monday, February 25, 2019 at 11:00 A.M. at the Sherman’s Valley Brethren in Christ Church, Valley Church Road, Hopewell, PA with Pastors Rick and Sharon Riley officiating.

Friends may call at Akers Funeral Chapel, 715 Church Street, Saxton, PA, on Sunday, February 24, 2019 from 2-4 P.M. and on Monday from 10 A.M. until the hour of service at the church.

Burial will be held at Sherman’s Valley Cemetery, Hopewell, PA.
