Barbara Lee Hammonds

Barbara Lee (Brewer) Hammonds (74) of Clearville PA, previously of Annandale, VA died peacefully at Bedford Hospital, following an extended illness, on Thursday, April 19, 2018. Born in Burbank, CA, she was the daughter of late James and Muriel Brewer. She was preceded in death by her husband, Joe W. Hammonds in 2009, and her sisters, Jeanne Nienhuis and Nancy McCarthy.

Barbara retired from the American Society of Hospital Pharmacists (ASHP) in 2009, and was previously employed by the American Psychological Association, the American Symphony Orchestra League, and the Florida school system.

She is survived by her sister by choice, Rita Crowe and her husband “Bro” Don, Lonaconing, MD; as well as closest friends and chosen family Paula and Terence Casey, Bowie, MD and Holly Hedstrom and husband Tom, Charlottesville, VA. Barbara was Oma to her special granddaughters, Emily and Meredith Casey.

Also surviving are three brothers-in-law: Don Hammonds and wife Lynne of Atlanta, GA, Terry Nienhuis, Richmond VA and William (Bunky) McCarthy, Vienna VA, as well as nephews, Joe P. and Chris Hammonds, and niece, Amy Kropacek. She is also survived by a cousin, Larry Berg and wife Cathy, Star, ID.

Since relocating to Clearville, Barbara was active in numerous local endeavors, including the Bedford County Basketweavers, and established a local Red Hat Society group. While in the Washington DC area, she and her husband sang with the Washington Saengerbund. She leaves behind many dear friends.

At her request, her body has been cremated. A celebration of her splendid life is planned for a later date.
