Merriam J. (Shab) Smith

Merriam J. Shab Smith, 88, of Mifflin Street, Hopewell, Pennsylvania; passed away on Tuesday, June 20, 2017 at Nason Hospital. She was born on April 27, 1929 in Everett, Pennsylvania; a daughter of the late Charles and Sara O. (Collins) Shab.  On March 22, 1947 in the Hopewell United Methodist Church, she married Arthur Calvin Smith.  He preceded her in death in October of 2000. She is survived by children Lonnie D. Smith, Roaring Spring, PA; Christa G. married to George Gibson, Indian Hills, CO; Kerry C. Smith, Hopewell, PA; Susan K. Smith, Hopewell, PA; sister Leona M. Casteel; grandchildren Justin D. Smith and Molly K. Hinds; great grandchildren Cassidy Hinds, Jonah Smith and Josslyn Smith.

She was preceded in death by a brother Amer C. Shab.

Mrs. Smith was a graduate of Robert P. Smith High School Class of 1946.

Merriam was the Hopewell Senior Center Site Manager for over 25 years until her retirement in 2004.  While working as the Senior Center Site Manager she coordinated trips and tours and enjoyed her traveling with them. She was a member of the Hopewell United Methodist Church as well as a lifetime member of the Hopewell Senior Center. She enjoyed playing piano, reading, singing, planting flowers, bird watching and loved shopping. She was also an avid Pittsburgh Steelers and Penn State football fan. Merriam also had a love for animals, especially her own dogs and cats.

A Memorial Service will be held at 2:00 P.M. on Saturday, August 12, 2017 with Rev. Dr. Carol Shab officiating, at Akers Funeral Chapel, 715 Church Street, Saxton, PA 16678.  Family and friends may be received from 1:00 P.M. till the hour of service at the chapel.
