Merle "Short" Abe Barton, 89, of Longs Run Road, Six Mile Run, Pennsylvania; passed away on Tuesday, January 9, 2018 at UPMC Bedford Memorial Hospital. He was born on March 3, 1928 in Six Mile Run, Pennsylvania; a son of the late Roy Earnest and Clara Mae (Weaverling) Barton. On January 4, 1969 in Six Mile Run, PA; he was united in marriage to Edna “Betty” Mae Barton. She preceded him in death on September 25, 2017.
He is survived by children Linda Smith, Larry Barton married to Carol, Mark Barton, Merle Barton, Jr. married to Kathy, Brad Barton, Sheila Jays, Penny Wilson married to Paul, step children Connie (Corbin) married to Alfred Watson and James Corbin; a brother Ernest “Bunk” Barton married to Libby; twenty grandchildren, thirty-nine great-grandchildren and six great great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by siblings Grace Spencer, William Barton, Mabel Figard, Ralph “Boots” Barton and Samuel Barton; step-siblings Roy Sheeder, Charlotte Sheeder and Ethel Sheeder.
Merle served in the United States Army, after being honorably discharged he worked in the coal mines and later working bridge construction.
He enjoyed spending time at Figard Garage, golfing and minituare golfing.
Mr. Barton attended Kearney Union Church.
A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, January 13, 2018 at 11:00 A.M. at the Kearney Union Church with Pastor Jerry Wright and Pastor Alfred H. Watson officiating.
If friends so desire memorial contributions may be made in memory of Merle to the Kearney Union Church, American Heart Association or the Wounded Warriors Project.
