Jay S. Barton, 80, of Crystal Spring, PA., went to join God’s heavenly choir and attend to His beautiful flower gardens, on Friday October 6, 2017. He passed away at home, surrounded by family, after a two month battle with brain cancer. He was born on February 18, 1937 to Dr. Charles R. Barton, Jr. and Helen Carroll Barton. He was preceded in death by his parents, step-mother, Marjorie McNamee Barton, brother Charles R. Barton III; brothers-in-law, Maynard Spade, and Steve Ellson, and sister-in-law, Janet C. Spade.
On November 23, 1986, he married his soulmate and best friend, Maxine Smith (Spade) Barton who survives along with the following family: sons, Jay S. Barton Jr. and wife Katrina and Robert F. Barton; step-daughters, Lori R. Hershberger and husband John and Karen S. Cline and husband Mike, sister Jere J. Ellson; brothers: Dr. Richard C. Barton and wife Kathy, and Bruce E. Barton and wife Debbie; sisters-in-law, Suzanne H. Barton and Josephine Spade, brother-in-law, Joe Spade. Also surviving are twelve grandchildren, Alecia Smith, Nicole Chalecki , Krista Barton, Joseph Barton, Matthew McCullough, Cody Cline , Brady Smith, Mitchell McCullough, Mason McCullough, Tessa Hershberger, Kiersten Cline, and Nicholas Pittman. Great-grands Ethan and Katie Chalecki, Addison and Asher Barton and Parker Smith and many loving nieces and nephews along with his furry friends Ben, Sophie and Molly.
Jay was a member of the former McKendree United Methodist Church, and attended Breezewood and Wesley Chapel United Methodist churches where he was the leader of the choir both in voice and in personality.
He served in the U.S. Air Force from 1956-1960, drove Greyhound buses for 22 years until his retirement and drove tractor trailer off and on for 40 years. He was a member of various barbershop groups including Flight 93 Memorial Chorus and the Harmony Hill Singers. He belonged to Bedford Springs Chapter # 41 Order of Eastern Star, where he was currently serving as Worthy Patron and was Past Master of Doric Lodge #630 in Sewickley, PA. He loved to sing, work his beautiful flower gardens, make military models, do ceramics, and spend time with his family and dogs. He was an inspiration to many and instilled the meaning of life to all his family especially his grandchildren. He will be sadly missed by all who knew him.
A Memorial Service will be held on Thursday, October 12, 2017 at 5:00 P.M. in the Chapel at Akers Funeral Home with Pastor Johnathan Morningstar and Pastor Debi Decker officiating.
A Visitation will be held on Thursday, October 12, 2017 from 1:00 P.M. until the hour of service at 5:00 P.M. A Masonic Service will be held by the Everett Masonic Lodge F.&A.M. No. 524 at 4:30 P.M. and the Bedford Springs Chapter No. 41 Order of the Eastern Star will conduct Services at 4:00 P.M. Everett Area Honor Guard will perform military honors at the funeral home.
Burial will be held privately by the family.
