Hugo Roberto Lopez

April 22, 1930 ~ July 6, 2017 (age 87) 87 Years Old


Hugo R. Lopez from Clearville PA passed away on Thursday, July 6, 2017.  He was born on April 22, 1930 in a town known as Villaclara (Clearville) Cuba. Hugo came to the U.S. to pursue the American Dream on October 12, 1948 and he did. He served in the U.S. Army from 1954 to 1956 and worked for the U.S. Army Research and Development Labs, Naval Research Lab, Naval Propellant Plant and the Naval Aviation Depot Operations Center where he retired as the Technical Director for Depot Operations after 34 years of service. He also ran two corporations, Solymar Inc. and El Tesoro Inc., dealing with real estate investments and engineering consulting respectively. He distinguished himself with many very special projects he did for NASA, Defense Communications Agency, U.S. Air Force, USMC and many others.

Hugo has a BS in Mechanical Engineering, Masters in Engineering and a PhD in Engineering. He also has certifications in Logistics Management from the U.S. Air Force Institute of Technology, Environmental Law and Total Quality Management from George Washington University and many more. He received many awards from the Department of Defense, Navy and many others for his technical and managerial work including a patent. He was awarded the Civil Service Award of Merit upon retirement.

Hugo‘s concern for paying back to his new country consisted of more than forty years of volunteer work for the American Red Cross, Meals on Wheels, ARC of Southern MD, Historic St. Mary’s City, Boy Scouts of America, U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary, Improved Order of Red Men, Sheriff and State Troopers in MD.

He was a life member of the American Legion and member of the Honor Guard, past Post Commander of AMVETS Post 11 Alexandria VA, past local and state President (Great Sachem) of the Improved Order of Red Men, Vice-Chairman of Fort Bedford District Boy Scouts of America, past National/Regional President/Board Member of many national management and technical organizations and a member of Everett’s First Christian Church. He served in every leadership position in Cubs Scouts and Boy Scouts at the Unit, District and Council level for over 31 years including the University of Scouting as well as the most beloved membership in the Order of the Arrow.

Hugo was truly one of a kind and lived life to the fullest.

Hugo is survived by Joyce Ann Wareham, his wife of 41 years, 7 children, 21 grandchildren, and many great grandchildren.

Hugo loved people and had a philosophy and commitment to make one person, or more, smile every day. Of course, that made him very happy too.

Family and Friends may call at the Akers Funeral Home, Inc., 299 Raystown Road, Everett on Sunday, July 9, 2017 from 2-5 P.M. and on Monday from 10:00 A.M. until the hour of service at the church.

Funeral Service will be held on Monday, July 10, 2017 at 11:00 A.M. at the First Christian Church, 57 Providence Street, Everett, PA 15537 with Rev. Robert R. Robertson officiating and the Everett Area Honor Guard conducting military honors.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Jude or your local American Red Cross.
