George A. Woomer

George A. Woomer, 79, of Newtown Road, Riddlesburg, Pennsylvania, passed away on Sunday, March 26, 2017 at his home.  He was born on February 22, 1938 in Broad Top, Pennsylvania, a son of the late Melvin Woomer and Alma (Clark) Woomer.  He is survived by his wife of fifty-seven years, Eugenia Mae (Houck) Woomer.

Along with his wife he is survived by two sons: Darin Woomer, married to Dana, Saxton, PA and Daniel Woomer, married to Stacy, Six Mile Run, PA; four grandchildren Gabrielle Woomer, Elaina Woomer, Daniel George Woomer and Drew Dennis Woomer and one great grandson Ryland Warren.

He was preceded in death by his brother Richard Woomer and sister Martha Hotninski.

Mr. Woomer was a 1955 graduate of Robertsdale High School, where he was a member of the legendary undefeated Robertsdale Tigers Football Team.  After graduation, he joined the U.S. Army as a Combat Engineer and served overseas from June 27, 1955 to July 29, 1957, he was awarded the Good Conduct Medal.  Upon returning home he worked in the Philadelphia Ship Yards as a fabricator/welder until 1962.  In 1962 George was hired by DuPont of Wilmington as a pipe foreman and welder where he worked for eight years.

George moved home to the Broad Top area in 1970 to work for Penelec at the Saxton Generating Station and worked for Raystown Dam Generating Station as a welder/fabricator. Upon Closure of Saxton Generating Station and Westinghouse Test Reactor, He purchased the Riddleburg AG Market. While pursuing his teaching degree from Pennsylvania State University he began his teaching career as the welding instructor and educator at the Altoona Greater Career and Technology Center for twenty-eight years. After retiring he continued to certify numerous welders for several area businesses and corporations.

George enjoyed hunting, fishing for stripers, and traveling. He loved spending time with his four grandchildren and one great grandson.

Funeral Service will be held on Friday, March 31, 2017 at 11:00 A.M. at the Six Mile Run United Methodist Church, 863 Six Mile Run Road, Defiance, PA 16633 with Lay Minister Rod Donaldson and Pastor Patty Wise officiating.

Family and Friends will be received at Akers Funeral Chapel, 715 Church Street, Saxton, PA on Thursday, March 30, 2017 from 6-8 P.M. and on Friday at the church from 10:00 A.M. until the hour of service at the church.

Burial will be held at Broad Top I.O.O.F. Cemetery, Broad Top City, PA with full military honors conducted by the Broad Top Area Honor Guard.

Pallbearers will be Melvin Woomer, Ron Houck, Donnie Houck, Eric Sacratini, John Black and Randy Smith.
