Clifford J Simmons

April 22, 1928 ~ January 11, 2018 (age 89) 89 Years Old

Clifford J. Simmons, 89, of Ragged Mountain Road, Clearville, Pennsylvania, passed away peacefully on Thursday, January 11, 2018, surrounded by his wife, daughter and granddaughter at Conemaugh Memorial Medical Center in Johnstown, PA.

He was born April 22, 1928, in Chaneysville, Pennsylvania, Southampton Township, the only son and child of Charley Herman and Mary Tula (Swartzwelder) Simmons.

Clifford is survived by his loving wife of 66 years, Marlene E. (Hammond) Simmons.  They were united in marriage on March 7, 1951.  He is also survived by two daughters, Cindy Miller, married to Terry Miller of Schellsburg, PA and Shirley Elbin of Warfordsburg, PA.  A granddaughter, whom he raised as his own, Michele (Elbin) Miller, married to Jason Miller of New Paris, PA.  He is also survived by two great-grandchildren, whom he loved very much, Olivia and Owen Miller.  He is survived by many loving cousins.

Clifford attended Everett High School.  He was a Corporal in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict.  Most of his service was spent overseas in Austria and Germany.  He received a National Defense Service Medal and Army of Occupation Service Medal for his service in Germany.  He was Honorably Discharged in December of 1954 after nearly two years of service.

Clifford was a farmer for most of his life having raised cattle, pigs and thousands of chickens.  He will be remembered by many who stopped by the farm for eggs or maybe the butcher shop.  He retired from the United States Postal Service on June 29, 1990, after 30 years as a mail carrier in the Clearville and Artemas area.  He loved his job as a mailman and formed many friendships with people over the years.  Clifford was a 52-year member of the American Legion Post 155, Artemas, PA.  He enjoyed deer hunting, especially with his friend, Danny Tewell until his passing.

He especially loved spending time with his great-grandchildren, Owen and Olivia, often taking them for rides all over the farm in his Mule.  He spent his final months surrounded by them, his wife, granddaughter and grandson-in-law at the home of his granddaughter in New Paris.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in memory of Clifford to the Chaneysville Cemetery Association (Attention: Jimmy Tewell) 2930 Black Valley Road, Everett, PA 15537.
